Voter Guide
November 3, 2020 Election

John Zola, Jaye Zola, Rona Wilensky and Tad Kline

Here are our suggestions for the November ballot in Boulder, Colorado and beyond. We include recommendations for ballot issues but want to emphasize the importance of voting for all of the elected representatives. We strongly recommend voting a straight Democratic ticket as a way to hold Republicans to account for their choices over the past 4 years. A downloadable version of this document is available here for you to update and share.

Please

  • Share this as widely as possible with friends, family and your other networks by email, text or snail mail!

  • Make sure it goes to voting age young adults and encourage them to pass it along to their friends and networks.

First things first: Vote in whatever manner seems most safe and secure for you based on local conditions:

  • If you are voting by mail, return your ballot as soon as possible.

  • If you are mailing it, make sure to attach enough postage. Use two $.55 (or Forever) stamps to be on the safe side.

  • If you have access to a ballot drop box, use it or return your ballot in person to the election office.

  • If voting in person, take advantage of early voting days if possible. Plan to do so safely and reserve enough time in case there are lines. Bring water, a snack, something to read and wear a mask.

  • Early voting helps your Clerk’s office handle the special complexities of this pandemic election.

Here we go in the order of the ballot, following our VOTE DEMOCRATIC advice:

  • President/Vice President: Joe Biden/Kamala Harris

  • United States Senator: John Hickenlooper

  • Representative 2nd Congressional District: Joe Neguse (vote Democrat if in a different Congressional District)

  • Regent University of Colorado 2nd District: Callie Rennison (or Democrat in different district)

  • Colorado State Senator District 18: Steve Fenberg (or Democrat in different district)

  • Colorado State Representative District 10: Edie Hooten (or Democrat in different district)

  • District Attorney 20th Judicial District: Michael Dougherty

  • JUDICIAL RETENTION QUESTIONS: VOTE YES ON ALL JUDGES

  • Boulder County Commissioner District 1: Claire Levy

  • Boulder County Commissioner District 2: Marta Loachamin

  • STATE BALLOT MEASURES

    • Amendment B: YES. This repeal of the Gallagher Amendment is a complex and conflicted issue that will need follow up legislation. That said, it is an important first step for needed state financial reform

    • Amendment C: YES. Why not make it easier for small charities to run bingo?

    • Amendment 76: NO. These provisions are already in law.

    • Amendment 77: NO. We don’t want town to town competition leading to more betting and higher stakes.

    • Proposition EE: YES. It raises taxes on nicotine in vaping products and raise taxes on other tobacco products discouraging youth use and making more funding available for health care and pre-school.

    • Proposition 113: YES. This will have Colorado join a national compact that supports the direct election of the President by popular vote, bypassing the Electoral College.

    • Proposition 114: YES. Allows the reintroduction of wolves in Colorado. They were here first.

    • Proposition 115: NO, NO, NO. Restricts access to abortion.

    • Proposition 116: NO. This is no time to be limiting revenue by lowering the state income tax.

    • Proposition 117: NO. We don’t want the cumbersome, delaying burden of repeated get voter approval for certain new state enterprises including development impact fees that could fund transportation and build or remodel schools.

    • Proposition 118: YES. The pandemic has taught everyone the importance of paid family and sick leave.

  • CITY OF BOULDER

    • 2B: YES with reservations. This is the “no eviction without representation” question. Many details need to be figured out but everyone deserves a lawyer in these situations.

    • 2C: YES. Sign the franchise agreement with Xcel and end the municipalization process. We have gotten many concessions and need to turn our attention to many other city issues including racial justice.

    • 2D: YES. Companion to Xcel franchise question

    • 2E: NO. The Mayoral function in a City Manager model is the internal management of City Council meetings. It does not need to be put to a public vote.

    • 2F: NO OPINION. Would increase the number of persons on the Arts Commission to 7 members.
