There’s Work to Do to Win These Winnable Elections

Call to Action

  • Donate to one or two national races (House or Senate) where your dollars count.

  • Volunteer in a local get-out-the-vote effort where you live or work remotely in a race where you have a connection.

Midterm elections have historically turned against the incumbent President’s party but we have many reasons to believe that with the recent events, continued effort and high turnout we can win a larger majority in the Senate and still keep the House. Here are a few recent big wins for Democrats due to hard work and organized efforts:

  • The surprising turnout for and triumph of abortion rights in the Kansas statewide referendum.

  • A nationwide increase in voter registration and high proportion of women, citing abortion rights, who are getting ready to vote in November.

  • Michigan, which has 4 close House races and a key Governor’s race, will hold a direct referendum on abortion rights after a State Court overruled Republican efforts to keep the question off the ballot. High Democratic turnout is expected.

  • Two unexpected Democratic wins in recent House special elections - upstate New York and Alaska!

  • The stunning revelations of Trump’s illegal behavior during and after his term in office keep the focus of the election on the Republicans’ slavish devotion to this would be dictator.

  • The January 6th Committee will resume work in early fall and continue to reveal more about The Big Lie and provide additional incentives for why Trump Republicans do not deserve to hold office.

All of this is good news for Democratic candidates but none of it will carry the day unless we help make sure that Democrats, Independents and anti-MAGA Republicans turn out in HUGE numbers to vote for Democratic candidates.

Making that happen can be slow and sometimes tedious work: registering as many citizens as possible who are eligible to vote up until the last date of voter registration; updating voter registration information for folks who have moved or haven’t voted recently; reminding people of the logistics of voting in each community; getting rides for folks who need them; and doing whatever else it takes to convince people to fill out their ballots.

Campaigns need money to pay staff to organize volunteers and they need volunteers to both canvass in person or by phone to dot the I’s and cross the T’s and to help with Election Day logistics.

We’re asking you to donate money to one or two national races to help them hire those Get Out the Vote coordinators and for you to volunteer with a local campaign or your county’s Democratic Party in order to provide the volunteer power that transforms discontent into votes that make the difference!

How to find a campaign to support and work with

We encourage you to support candidates and races in states where you live, have family or have emotional connections. Take a look at an electoral map - there are 33 Senate races and there are important close races for House seats in almost every state. One of these races should be near you and/or close to your heart! The website 538 has useful maps for Senate, House and Governor races that will help you identify places you might get involved. This is a national election and every bit as important as the presidential race. Even in deep blue California and Washington, and deep red Kansas and Ohio, there are close House races where money and volunteer effort might make the difference.

What if your preferred contest is far from home? Of course, you can donate money anywhere in the country as long as you are a citizen. Just as importantly, you can work the phone banks and write postcards from anywhere. Whether you live in a blue urban enclave or a seemingly solid red rural community your vote, your money and your volunteer work will matter!
